  • 1 pound chicken sausage (without casings)
  • 1 and 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 3 cups (28 ounce) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 cups (16 ounce) tomato sauce
  • 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Dried basil
  • Italian seasoning

Instructions

  1. In a large Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic; cook until softened.
  2. Add chicken sausage and ground beef; brown until no longer pink, breaking apart with a wooden spoon.
  3. Drain excess grease, then stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and water from jars.
  4. Mix in tomato paste, brown sugar, salt, pepper, dried basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and optional red pepper flakes.
  5. Reduce heat to low; let simmer for at least 1½ to 2 hours to deepen flavors.
