  • 1½ teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • ½ cup milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (reserve ½ cup)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and prepare a muffin tin by greasing it.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, beaten eggs, sour cream, canola oil, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until just combined. Fold in 1¼ cups of chocolate chips gently.
  5. Fill each muffin cup nearly to the top and sprinkle remaining chocolate chips on top.
  6. Bake for 5 minutes at 400°F before reducing the temperature to 350°F (175°C) for an additional 12–15 minutes. Check doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  7. Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
